21 Jun Design in the UK – Matthew Hilton and his iconic works
The future of design is seduction
– Matthew Hilton
This has already been a very special summer for Britain. The nation has barely finished the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations, and the Olympics are around the corner. Hence, there is no better time to rediscover and pay tribute to the best of British design. This week the Tangram blog pinpoints the essence of renowned designer Matthew Hilton’s iconic works.
Hilton first became known for his sumptuous Balzac armchair designed for SCP in 1991. (which quickly gained the status of a modern classic of the 90s)
In his most recent items for De La Espada, one can sense the winning combination of simplicity and sophistication. This is the expression of Hilton’s underlying ideology since his school years – he never sacrifices the functional in favour of style in order to improve people’s lives and make them happier through design. At the same time, all his products benefit from an expert knowledge of materials and technical ingenuity, which leads to the uncompromising quality for which Hilton’s designs are known.
The recent Oscar sofa from SCP reflects the best of Hilton. The subtle minimalism is balanced with traditional eye-catching feet in solid wood and buttoned back. The sofa is large in size yet light in appearance, and I must confess that the Oscar is arguably the most comfortable seat in our whole showroom today! Now also available in more compact sizes.
