15 Sep Designers of our time – Antonio Citterio
Here’s the latest ‘Designers of our time’ column, which features in the September 2011 issue of ESPC’s Premier Living magazine. For this one I looked at the career of the prolific Italian designer, Antonio Citterio.

___________
Originally trained as an architect, Antonio Citterio quickly became involved in a broad range of design activity and in 1999 founded a multidisciplinary practice for architecture, industrial design and graphics.
His architectural projects have varied from headquarter buildings for GlaxoSmithKline and urban redesign in Milan and Hamburg, to jewellery stores for De Beers and hotels for Bulgari.
However, it is for industrial and furniture design that Citterio is best known. He has designed for leading furniture manufacturers including B&B Italia, Flexform, Kartell and Vitra. The Charles sofa (pictured) for B&B Italia was designed in 1997 and, with its slim styling and minimal feet, has become a modern classic.
His most significant furniture project is Maxalto, the B&B Italia brand designed and co-ordinated entirely by Citterio; products for the complete home, from beds and dining tables to sofas and wardrobes.
Beyond furniture, Citterio designs bathroom fittings for Hansgrohe, lights for Flos, gym equipment for Technogym and cutlery for iitala. He is in demand as a teacher has been recognised with numerous awards and has had products selected for the permanent collections of MOMA, New York, and the Centre Pompidou, Paris.
Tangram are delighted to supply both B&B Italia and Maxalto to our interior design clients in Edinburgh. Visit our showroom or contact our team today to discuss your project.
