Colour Psychology
We all know that colour isn’t merely a matter of aesthetics; it’s a powerful tool that can influence mood, perception, and even behaviour. From calming blues to energising yellows, the colours we choose for our living spaces can have a profound impact on our well-being and the atmosphere of our homes.
When selecting colours for your home, it’s essential to consider the function of each space and the mood you want to create. For example, a bedroom should promote relaxation and restfulness, making it an ideal choice for soft, soothing colours such as a pale blue, lavender, or sage green. In contrast, a home office might benefit from invigorating shades of yellow or orange to boost productivity and creativity. And remember, you can also use colour to highlight architectural features and create visual interest!
Below we look at colour examples and the impact they create on different rooms in the home.
Red
Panton Chair – Vitra
Blue
Tufty Bed – B&B Italia
Often associated with serenity and tranquillity, blue is an excellent choice for bedrooms, bathrooms, and other spaces where relaxation is paramount. Blue used to be considered as a cold colour and best to be avoided. However, there are so many variations of blue and even the coolest of blues can bring warmth when paired with for example pink or orange tones.
Green
Costura Sofa – STUA
Symbolising growth, renewal, and harmony, green can bring a sense of balance to your home. And with a strong connect to the natural world, it is perfect for living rooms, kitchens, and areas where you want to promote a sense of well-being. Think biolithic design and bringing the outdoors in! In addition, green can create the illusion of more space if for example it is applied in any room overlooking a garden.
Yellow
CH24 Wishbone Chairs – Carl Hansen & Son
As the colour of sunshine, yellow is known for its uplifting and energising qualities. Whether you use it sparingly or in abundance, yellow hues will immediately add warmth and optimism. Particularly lovely in spaces such as kitchens, dining rooms, or hallways/entrances. Always cheerful!
Pink
Violin Chair – GUBI
Neutrals
V11 lounge Chair – GUBI
Versatile and timeless, neutral colours like white, beige, and grey provide a neutral backdrop for other decor elements and allow you to change accents easily over time. To make neutrals more interesting, we would recommend the additional use of lots of texture in the room, this will instantly add character. For example, think rattan table lamps, boucle cushions and woven rugs.
