03 Aug Heirloom Collection
Heirlooms – the much-loved possessions we are proud to pass down.
Often these treasures have a story to tell and hold great sentimental value. When passed down to the next generation, the recipient becomes the next custodian, and more memories are made.
These precious items stand the test of time not just in terms of function, but also style. While many of our products have heirloom potential, we explore a few special standout items. Exquisitely designed and recognised worldwide, these products already have a story to tell and their next chapter could start with you.
Considered “the timeless icon of modern Danish design”, CH24 (or as it’s more commonly known, the Wishbone chair) is a perfect example of an item to be passed down again and again. Inspired by the thrones of Chinese Emperors, designer Hans J. Wegner created the Wishbone Chair in 1949. A masterpiece combining outstanding craftsmanship with exceptional quality, the chair has been in continuous production since it was introduced. Instantly recognisable from its characteristic Y-shaped back, from which it was named, and the hand-woven seat, which uses 120 metres of paper cord. A fine example of a product that will be loved for generations to come.
As the name suggests this rug collection from Walter Knoll is becoming a legend. The designs were inspired by the colours and landscapes of Africa, and hand-knotted in certified Nepalese workshops following century old traditions. The collection Legends of Carpets translates abstract paintings into timeless, woven works of art. Made from the finest materials including wool, yarn and silk, hand-dyed over several months, each rug is unique and precious.
One of the most famous designs by Charles and Ray Eames is the Eames Lounge Chair designed in 1956. Keen to update the old English Club Chair, Charles Eames initiated the development of this remarkable armchair which took several years. The aim was to combine high quality materials with craftsmanship to create something elegant, modern and extremely comfortable. Now considered a classic in the history of modern furniture, the Eames Lounge Chair is certainly a product that future generations will enjoy!
Louis Poulsen’s most successful lighting design, the PH 5 designed by Poul Henningsen, is another example of design excellence. Henningsen wanted to create a lampshade that emitted a “functional, pleasant, and glare-free light”. The result was this instantly successful multi-shade lamp which launched in 1927. As popular today as it ever has been, the PH 5 has expanded to include a floor lamp, table lamp and many other variations.
“An icon of contemporary design” the Charles sofa is recognised for its light image and die-cast aluminium feet in the shape of an inverted “L”. Designed by the famous Antonio Citterio, the Charles has a simple profile, yet there is a formal elegance about it. A truly timeless piece, the Charles will continue to be featured in homes for years to come, of that we are sure.
CH825 Credenza – Carl Hansen & Son
Another of Hans J. Wegner designs that has great heirloom potential is the beautiful CH825 credenza designed in 1959. Sought after at auctions many years after it was first designed, Carl Hansen & Son relaunched the product from Wegner’s original sketches to mark what would have been his 100th birthday. Whilst it may have a simple appearance, the design is somewhat ingenious. The roller shutter doors seem to disappear as they are opened, gliding smoothly on an internal track behind the sides and back panel. The doors themselves form a continuous veneer surface with the vertical grain texture – a seamless pattern made only using hand-picked pieces of timber. Inside the cabinet you will find functional trays and useful storage space. An incredible piece that combines beauty and function marvellously.
