Meet the team
Next up in our ‘Meet the Team’ blog series is Interior Designer Melissa Mathieson.
We hope you enjoy the read and getting to know us. To find out more about the Tangram team head over to our About Us page or pop into our Edinburgh showroom on Jeffrey Street.
Name: Melissa Mathieson
Job title: Interior Designer
1. What does a typical day at Tangram look like for you?
Along with the general running of the showroom, I assist with client enquiries and provide interior design advice. I am almost always working on a job with our contract at two prominent CALA developments in Edinburgh, where we advise and supply Silent Gliss blinds, one of our best-selling products. As the first point of contact, I am responsible for handling all enquiries, the logistics of orders and job delivery. I also take ownership over any 2D drawings and 3D visualisations, helping with layouts and working closely with clients allowing me to bring their ideas to life.
2. Favourite designer/interior designer/architect or hero?
I love Scandinavian design so anyone such as Verner Panton, Greta Grossman or Poul Henningsen has my vote! Clean but full of life, light but colourful, it is the perfect balance that can work in any space. You can almost imagine them intertwining their designs with some amazing pieces from Carl Hansen and Zeitraum!
3. Describe briefly what your dream home would look like – particularly the interior?
Rooms with high ceilings that are full of colour, light, and plants! In relation to this, big windows and an outdoor space are a must. I have been spoiled working at Tangram, being surrounded by such beautiful furniture that I would have very high standards for anything going into my dream home, but the Husk armchair from B&B Italia would definitely be a feature. I also wouldn’t say no to a second home on the banks of Lake Como!
4. Favourite thing about your job?
I really enjoy the visualisation aspect of my job, allowing us to see how different pieces of furniture will sit within a project. This allows us to explore a range of possible solutions to a deeper level for the client. It can be a challenge at times but when it comes together it feels very rewarding.
5. What do you like doing when you’re not at work?
As everyone at work will know, as it’s my standard reply to “what did you do this weekend”, I play hockey and am very involved in my club so this is very much a staple! Apart from that, I enjoy hiking, camping, surfing, snowboarding, anything outside really! And the obvious answer of spending time with family and friends, and any excuse to meet up for a pint!
6. Favourite dad joke?
What do you call a Frenchman wearing sandals? Philippe Flop.
