74 – Bocci
Designed by Omer Arbel. 74 is a new LED spotlighting system designed by Omer Arbel for Bocci to rival conventional systems of track-lighting. Highly technical in its construction and execution, 74 relies on a system of magnetic attachment points to grant the user maximum control over trajectorial light pathways. Polarized Cables are anchored to various points in a room, plotting trajectories and intersection points for the spheres to activate.
The spotlights are housed inside the spun metal and cast glass mirrored spheres. One of the critical components of 74 is the lens—one that, by necessity, is optically clean for light transmission, and to match the metallic nature of the rest of the fixture. As a result, the lens is metallised in a vacuum chamber to achieve a molecular bond. Rather than fully coat the lens, a complex process was engaged to create a gradient that visually bridges glass and metal together.
Low voltage electrical current passes through delicate coaxial cables that crossfire back and forth, creating a dynamic free composition in three-dimensional space. Adjustable spheres positioned at intersections punctuate this relationship, positioning 74 as a step forward from traditional track-lighting paradigms.
