04 May Tangram’s Favourite Finds Part 3 – Salone del Mobile 2017
Our previous blog entries highlighted a few of our most loved pieces of contemporary contract furniture and stylish furnishings for the home, found at this year’s Salone del Mobile. In this issue we focus our attention on lighting.
Running concurrently with Salone is the international lighting exhibition Euroluce – a highly established event, showcasing the latest and most creative lighting systems for both domestic and commercial use. The 2017 edition did not disappoint.
Foscarini – Le Soleil
Starting off our top picks is the ‘Le Soleil’ suspension lamp, which Foscarini have relaunched in bronze and copper colours. The diffuser, formed with uneven bands made from polycarbonate, almost gives the impression of a beehive, particularly with the introduction of these warm colours. Playful and captivating, we just adore these!
Örsjö – Streck
Joel Karlsson outlines his design thinking when stating “part of the way I work is very involved in how we look at things – as if we are always on a visit to a museum”. This keen eye for detail is very apparent in his Streck range. Available as a table, floor or wall light, in three colours, with beautiful brass detail.
Marset – Follow me
A larger version of the original, the ‘follow me’ table lamp is brilliantly versatile. Rechargeable, portable and can be used indoors and outdoors, we just can’t fault it.
Flos – Arrangements
The Flos stand got everyone talking this year, and a highlight for many. We were particularly excited by the collection titled ‘Arrangements’. Designer Michael Anastassiades has cleverly mixed geometric shapes and created elements of delicacy and perfect balance.
Flos – Gaku by Nendo
Quirky, brilliant and practical – framed lighting scenes by Nendo.
Varying magnetic accessories allow the user to rearrange these illuminated boxes to their preference. Sitting together like this they almost tell a story, emphasising that lighting design can go much further than the light itself. Nendo has ironically thought ‘outside the box’.
Louis Poulsen – VL45 Radiohus Pendant
World famous lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen returned to Euroluce with some striking products including the relaunch of the VL45 Radiohus Pendant. Introduced 80 years ago, it is a timeless design in a class of its own. The newer edition retains the aesthetics but with modern lighting technologies and energy efficiency – we can’t wait to get our hands on these!
Ingo Maurer – Yoruba Rose
Rounding off our favourite lighting solutions for 2017 is the exquisite Yoruba Rose. Almost 20 years after launching the Mamo Nouchies series, a new shell-like shape is released. The lamp has been crafted using multiple treatments of Japanese paper which have been folded and pulled to create a beautiful flow. The end result is a product with such grace it looks life-like.
The vast array of lighting fixtures at Milan Design Week was simply overwhelming; the emergence of LED technology is driving numerous new design possibilities. Each one as creative and innovative as the next, whereby designers from around the world showcased their, dare we say it, ‘light bulb moments’.
