20 May Working Outdoors
Inspired by an article from Spanish furniture manufacturer, Andreu World, we discuss the new office trend of working outdoors!
Expanding the office outdoors
We hear a lot about indoor outdoor living these days and the benefits of expanding the home to the outdoors. But what about expanding the office outdoors?
Recent studies show that working outdoors enhances greater creativity, collaboration and problem solving. This idea is very much linked to the biophilia hypothesis – a concept that explores humans’ innate instinct to connect to the outdoors.
Spending time in nature is essential to our wellbeing and happiness but it is not often considered the done thing in an office environment. However, this thought is shifting!
In open plan offices, where there can often be many distractions – ringing phones, loud conversations etc. – an outdoor workspace can offer an escape; a place to really concentrate on those tasks that need a little more focus.
In addition to increased productivity, working outdoors can also increase energy levels, idea generation as well as relieving stress. With so many benefits it is no wonder that more and more companies are encouraging outdoor working.
And there are many ways to enjoy the outdoors while in the workplace! For example, companies may consider scheduling meetings in the form of walks in the park, outdoor team-building exercises, alfresco lunches – these simple adaptations can really improve employee health and happiness. But, it doesn’t stop there – to really embrace outdoor working, many companies take the idea a step further. How? by incorporating dedicated work zones outside!
How to design an outdoor office
When it comes to designing an outdoor workspace, it is important to consider functionality and of course the weather! Here in Scotland, we are not always blessed with glorious sunshine and thus weatherproof, durable furniture is critical. Below we highlight some excellent outdoor office options to really embrace this new way of working!

Points to consider
The above examples cater to a mix of working styles, collaborative and solo, and this is of course important to consider when we think of outdoor working.
Outdoor sofas for example are great options allowing teams to come together as a group and think creatively. But there are also times when a small table and comfortable chair is required to allow maximum concentration for individuals. If space permits and both collaborative and solo working spaces are offered, remember to allow sufficient space between so that each can perform effectively and efficiently.
Other points to consider are strong Wi-Fi and parasols for glare-free (and drizzle-free) working!
