Behind the scenes with Nanimarquina

In this blog series, we go behind the scenes with Nanimarquina to highlight to you what it is that makes them so special. This week we’re taking a closer look at the Spanish rug manufacturer, a family-run business that believes in the power of textiles to improve people’s wellbeing.

Nanimarquina was founded in Barcelona in 1987 by Nani Marquina. Since its beginnings, the company has grown massively with approximately 100,000 households owning a nanimarquina rug. While they have over 400 sale points around the world. Yet despite it’s impressive growth, the company’s values have always remained. Making nanimarquina such a wonderful company to work with.

We’re taking a look at some of these values today.

Tradition

Working with countries that have mastered the art of weaving rugs (including India, Pakistan and Nepal), nanimarquina has a deep respect for ancestral techniques and traditions. Allowing the company to create high quality rugs that exude not only craftsmanship and charm, but history too.

The following videos capture the remarkable journey these rugs embark on from concept to completion. As you can see, these handmade pieces are made with the utmost care and precision. While encapsulating years of tradition and artisanal excellence.

Colour

Another prominent value for this Spanish rug company is colour and its effect on our emotions and wellbeing.

“Everything around us is made up of colours that affect us in one way or another. No colour is devoid of meaning, or context. It is magical to see how the presence, and absence, of colour influence not only a room but also our state of mind. Bringing calm and energy.”

This idea has inspired their newest collection, Tones, which really celebrates colour. Designed by artist Claudia Valsells ‘Tones’ is made up of four rug models that provide a distinctive, harmonious, rhythmic and sensitive approach. With colour as the central tool.

Translating vibrant colours and patterns into rug form often involves complex handcraft techniques and great skill. The Losanges collection, for example, requires Afghan wool to be handspun to achieve unique colour combinations. These include 13 colours in a geometrical rhombus pattern! It’s a great challenge for the craftsmen of Northern Pakistan and therefore it’s what makes each rug completely unique.

Culture

As tradition is important, so too is culture.

‘We dedicate a large part of our collections to showcasing the original work of artists such as Javier Mariscal, Eduardo Chillida or Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, amongst others. This way, and under strict respect for copyright protection, we are committed to the preservation of contemporary culture.’

Nanimarquina has collaborated with international designers for more than 30 years. Therefore believing this is a necessity to remain a contemporary brand.

A great example of this ideology put into practice is in a recent collaboration with nanimarquina and artist Santi Moix. Nani Marquina fell in love with Santi Moix’s floral paintings and the way he captures flowers in their most precious moments. This admiration led to their collaboration and a new collection of beautiful rugs was born.

Beyond a decorative item

Nanimarquina does not see rugs as merely a decorative addition to a room, but rather the soul of the space.

Rugs have many benefits, beyond being aesthetically pleasing. Below are a few examples:

  • They act as a natural filter to trap dust, minimising the risk of allergies
  • They provide natural thermal insulation, helping to save energy
  • They provide acoustic insulation
  • They provide a non-slip surface
  • They help define spaces

Whether for a home, contract project or Edinburgh hotel furniture, a rug can really make a space.

One does not need to dig very deep to identify that nanimarquina are extremely passionate about what they do and what they make!

“Design is infused in the essence of nanimarquina, and thanks to that, we have been able to achieve our goal: create rugs that convey emotions and make us feel good.”

Combining traditional and contemporary practices, nanimarquina create exceptional rugs, always with the aim to make people happy.
