How to decorate a hallway

How to make the most out of your hallway

Discover our useful design tips and hallway must-haves so you can elevate this often forgotten space. These areas should not only be functional, but beautiful too. By following our ideas below you can inject your own personality into the space and make it one to be proud of.

Storage solutions

To start with, a functional hallway should have somewhere to store outdoor clothes and shoes, and a place to put our purse/wallet and keys. This is the bare minimum to avoid clutter traipsing through to the rest of your home (it will also ensure you don’t forget your keys – we’ve all been there!)

Aura Treku Hallway

The Aura from Treku is a gorgeous modern sideboard with an extremely flexible design. The perfect hallway companion to store keys, facemasks, loose change and any other day-to-day items.

Swedese coat hooks

Wall hooks, such as these lovely Atlas hooks from Swedese, provide a great solution if space is short. Bags, coats or scarves can be neatly hung out the way, and in a stylish fashion.

Schonbuch Letter Sorter

Junk mail – no thank you! Organise your post with the Shönbuch letter holder.  ‘When used to hold invitations or tickets for the first night of the opera or a football match with a favourite team, it adds to the sense of eager anticipation.’

Igor Porada Coat Stand

Like your own personal butler, a coatstand is there ready to take your outer garments as you walk in the door. It’s an absolute staple piece for a hallway and this Igor coatstand from Porada is particularly lovely! With its walnut, marble and brass details it has a beautiful classic aesthetic which we adore.

Mirrors

In addition to storage, it is always a good idea to hang a mirror in the hallway so we can have that final check before dashing out the door. Mirrors also have the added benefit of bouncing light which will give the illusion of space in a small area.

Randaccio Wall Mirror Gubi

One of Gio Ponti’s signature designs is the Randaccio Mirror from 1925.  Simple yet refined with its crown-like detailing, the mirror from Gubi is sure to instill sophistication and elegance.

Porada Ren Mirror

Poltrona Frau’s Ren mirror is so charming it even has a little circular key tray as well as two handy hooks for coats or scarves. A beautiful and practical addition to any hallway!

Benches and seating

To give you a feeling of pride as you enter your home, you may consider adding a beautiful piece of furniture to your hallway, such as a chair or bench. This is not only convenient for taking off those muddy boots but will really give the impression you have put thought into the space.

The clean and classic OW150 daybed designed by Ole Wanscher for Carl Hansen and Son features ‘a single long cushion that appears to float above an angular, solid oak frame.’ You really can’t go wrong with a seat as timeless as this.

Vitra Black Nelson Bench

The gorgeous Nelson Bench from Vitra, now available in black ash, provides a sleek and contemporary look yet simultaneously feels soft and welcoming. Pair with a stack of books and a cosy throw and you might not want to leave your hallway at all.

USM hallway

The USM Haller storage unit is the ideal place to take your shoes off and store them too. The Haller is completely customisable and available in oodles of colour options – a design that will suit any space.

Wow factor

But don’t stop there – our final tip is to make this space as interesting as all the other rooms in your house. Your hallway is a glimpse of what is to come and so it’s also a good idea to add a bit of your personality and create that ‘wow factor’. For example, why not create a feature wall – a pop of colour, mural or even gallery wall which will instantly add character and charm. You could also display your items – family photographs, art, your beloved hat collection, surfboard or bike. Whatever it may be, show it off and reflect a bit of you, it is your home after all.

Extinct Anilmals Wallcovering Moooi

Moooi’s Menagerie of Extinct Animals Wallcovering will be sure to add interest to your entranceway! Unusual and beautiful wallpaper like this will immediately intrigue guests to wonder what the rest of your home has in store!

Vitra Objects

A hallway shouldn’t just be about hanging coats and stacking shoes. Celebrate the space and display your treasures – just how many is up to you!
