The Manufacturer Behind Ferrari Interiors: Poltrona Frau
When we think of Italian craftsmanship, certain names instantly spring to mind — and Poltrona Frau is undoubtedly one of them. Known worldwide for its iconic furniture designs, the brand is also the driving force (pardon the pun) behind the interiors of Ferrari, creating 62 car interiors every single day at their headquarters in Tolentino, Italy.
Recently, our colleagues Joanne and Sarah had the opportunity to visit the Poltrona Frau HQ which includes the factory, museum, and showroom in Tolentino. The experience highlighted just how deeply rooted craftsmanship is in the company’s culture.
At Poltrona Frau, workers aren’t simply employees - they are referred to as artisans, and that they really are! The furniture is meticulously made by hand, with generations of expertise passed down over time. In fact, the company even brings retired artisans back into the factory to train new team members, ensuring that no skill is ever lost. We were really surprised by the lack of machinery, which in today's market is really unusual.
Every single fold that is created in the leather is worked by hand and a shaping tool used to ensure it is smooth and wrinkle free - some of the products have an incredible number of folds and so this really helps understand why some of the pieces are so time and labour intensive.
Touring the museum allowed us to immerse ourselves in the history of Poltrana Frau through the amazing archive of material they have gathered. From original pieces of furniture through to displays of innovative advertising carried out in the 70's it was fascinating and incredibly enjoyable to understand the background to this incredible company.
The factory itself is home to around 600 workers and is a huge part of village life in Tolentino. More than just a workplace, it’s a community. There’s even a swimming pool for staff and their families - a reflection of the company’s commitment to people as much as to design.
Now that the team are back from their whistle-stop tour, we’re delighted to share that some of the brand’s latest designs are arriving in our showroom, including the stunning new Blisscape sofa. It’s a beautiful example of the same meticulous craftsmanship that goes into a Ferrari interior - this time translated into a piece made for the home.
Poltrona Frau’s dedication to tradition, skill, and innovation is why their furniture continues to be treasured across the world - and we’re excited to bring a little piece of that Italian artistry to Edinburgh.
