Lighting with a Story: Introducing Joe Armitage

This month we are highlighting a very special brand that is new to Tangram’s portfolio, Joe Armitage.
This London-based designer has a stunning lighting collection which has a deeply personal story that the team were captured by.

The journey begins in 1952 in Ludhiana, India, where Edward Armitage (Joe’s grandfather), an architect working in the same era as modernist greats such as Le Corbusier, designed and constructed a hospital. During his time here he also created a number of pieces of furniture as well as a very iconic lamp.

Joe’s design heritage runs deep. His grandfather left a lasting mark on the design world, while his grandmother is still shaping it today with her renowned wallpaper brand. With creativity woven through both sides of the family, Joe is now building his own legacy.

Having visited India and retraced his grandfather’s footsteps and old stomping grounds, Joe decided to build on Edward’s original design and reimagine that single lamp into a contemporary collection. By honouring the past, yet still feeling distinctly modern, the range now spans table, wall, accent and suspension lights — each carrying the iconic conical shade and sculptural silhouette that began with Edward Armitage.

And the collection doesn’t stop there. The Joe Armitage portfolio has continued to evolve with new and beautifully considered designs, including the Modernist lighting collection, which expands the language of his grandfather’s work while showcasing Joe’s own distinctive design voice.
