A Day Visiting Our Neck of the Woods: Exploring Jeffrey Street and Beyond

Edinburgh is a city filled with history, charm, and hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Nestled just a five-minute walk from Waverley Station, Tangram sits at the heart of one such gem - Jeffrey Street and its surrounding area. Whether you’re a local looking for fresh inspiration or a visitor arriving by train, spending a day exploring this part of town offers the perfect mix of design, shopping, dining, and culture. Here’s how we think you can make the most of it.

Morning: Coffee & Design Inspiration

Before delving into all things interiors, your day begins by fuelling up with a delicious frothy coffee and pastry from Cappuccino, conveniently located just a few metres from Tangram. With a warm and inviting atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to ease into your day.

At 10am Tangram opens its doors welcoming you into a world of beautifully curated furniture, lighting, and accessories. Take your time exploring the showroom, chatting with our expert interior designers and discovering pieces that can elevate your home or upcoming project. Whether you're planning a full redesign or looking for that one statement piece, we offer a range of timeless designs from some of Europe’s leading brands. If you’d like dedicated time with our interior designers to discuss plans or ideas in more detail, you’re welcome to book an appointment. However, if you prefer a more relaxed visit, where you can browse at your leisure, rifle through our samples and try out our showroom furniture, booking an appointment is not necessary. You’re welcome to drop in any time ( we're open weekdays, 10am-5pm) and our team will be on hand to answer any questions and assist you throughout your visit should you need.

Mid-Morning: Boutique Shopping & Hidden Gems

After soaking up some design inspiration, take a short stroll over to Corniche, a unique designer clothing boutique offering high-quality, carefully selected pieces. Established in 1975, Corniche is known for its contemporary yet timeless collections. Whether you’re after a wardrobe refresh or simply browsing, you are destined to find something entirely unique in this wonderfully quirky shop.

If you’re in the mood for more exploration, wander towards Mackenzie Leather, a traditional workshop and showroom on St Mary Street. Here you can watch the skilled craftsman at work whilst you browse their stunning collection of travel bags, handbags, belts, purses, briefcases and satchels. Established in 1990, their sumptuous collection of leather products are all handmade on site. From the moment you step through the door you are greeted by a friendly team and it is clear as day they are all extremely passionate about the work they do. A really lovely company and well worth a visit!

Just across the street you will find Scottish Textile Showcase. Proudly made in Scotland this company focusses on a curated collection of products made from natural fibres, wool, cashmere and alpaca. From beautiful throws and cushions to thick jumpers and knitwear, and everything in between - the quality is truly exceptional!

We also highly recommend Rosypenguin located within the Arches on Market Street. You may have come across this independent womenswear store before when it was located in Morningside. Now moved to it’s new location, just a stone’s throw away from Tangram, we adore this female founded shop. If you’re looking to update your wardrobe with something stylish and a little bit different, Rosypenguin should be on your visit list. The team really understand fashion and how to put a stylish outfit together and their curated collections are high quality and utterly gorgeous!

Lunchtime: French Flair at Garrigue

By now, you’ll have worked up an appetite, and there’s no better place for a leisurely lunch than La Garrigue. This charming French restaurant, just next door to Tangram, serves up authentic dishes with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. With a cosy yet elegant setting, it’s the perfect spot to indulge in classic French cuisine whilst enjoying views of Carlton Hill.

Afternoon: A Touch of Edinburgh’s Spirit

Make your way to the Edinburgh Gin Distillery which now how has a stunning new home, also at the Arches on Market Street. Whether you opt for a tour, a tasting experience, or to make your own bespoke gin, it’s a fantastic way to immerse yourself in Edinburgh’s thriving drinks scene!

Evening: Tapas & Wine at Piggs

Finally, why not end the day at Piggs Tapas and Wine Bar? This charming, family-run gem on the Royal Mile offers an intimate and authentic experience with a focus on Spanish-inspired small plates and carefully selected wines. Whether you’re sharing a bottle of Rioja over a selection of artisanal cheeses and meats or trying their signature tapas dishes, Piggs provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere that feels like a little slice of Spain in the heart of Edinburgh. We’ve visited on numerous occasions and have never been disappointed - it’s cosy, full of character, and always delicious!

Why Visit Our Neck of the Woods?

Although we’re just minutes from the Royal Mile, Jeffrey Street offers a refreshing alternative to the usual tourist trail. It’s a place where locals can find hidden gems and visitors can experience a different side of the city. Whether you're coming from across town or further afield, our corner of Edinburgh has plenty to offer, from interiors and fashion to fine dining and expertly mixed drinks.

We hope you will visit (or revisit) our neighbourhood soon and we look forward to welcoming you!
